The New College is a Muslim minority institution affiliated to the University of Madras, Chennai. It was founded in 1951 by the Muslim Educational Association of Southern India (MEASI). Although the college was established with the primary aim of providing higher education to the educationally backward sections in general and Muslim students in particular, its doors are open to all deserving students from across the country and abroad. Started with 200 students in the intermediate course, the college has grown to the current combined strength of over 6000 students in the Aided & Self-financed streams. Currently the college offers 28 Undergraduate, 14 Postgraduate, seven M.Phil., and 11 Ph.D. programs in Arts, Commerce and Science streams.

The New College secured ‘Autonomous’ status in 2007 and follows the choice-based credit system recommended by the UGC and the University of Madras. The college offers an Outcome Based curriculum framework for UG and PG programs. The college is accredited by NAAC with ‘A’ in the third cycle. In NIRF the college has been placed in the rank band of 150-200 since 2018.
