The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) is one of the earliest Open and Distance Learning (ODL) institutions in Nigeria. Currently NOUN as an ODL University in the country has aided in the creation of other ODL Universities. Since its inception in 1983, its mandate has been to reach every nook and cranny of the country offering tertiary education to those qualified and interested. NOUN offers a wide range of academic programmes at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the fields of the social sciences, education, arts, agriculture, sciences, computing, management, and law.

All courses offered by NOUN are currently accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC); the organization responsible for the accreditation of all degree programmes in Nigeria. The University is in collaboration with many academic institutions both local and international. As an ODL Institution, NOUN engages in the education of all including those in incarceration (Prison) and the promotion of lifelong learning through a flexible delivery system. At present, the total number of enrolled students is 150,000, which are distributed across our 116 Study Centres.
